A Vidor legend has entered eternal life! Mrs. Mary Rose Aiena Strother was born on October 27, 1924 and died this past week on Wednesday, January 2, 2019. She wanted to get to heaven as soon as possible to pull the Vidor Pirates onward to a State Championship for this upcoming season! Mrs. Strother was a dedicated employee of the Vidor Independent School district food services from 1965 until 1970. If you attended Vidor schools during these years, you were either was fed by her, or raced her on Main Street. More specifically, if you played for the mighty Pirates during the late 60’s, you might have had your pregame meal because of Mary. Since the cafeteria would close early on Fridays, some of the football team always would say, “Mary will feed us.” And, Mary did feed our Pirates before they took to the road by opening the back door of the old canteen. Once, a few players spotted Mary in her 1955 red and white hooded Cheverlet truck on Main Street in Vidor at a red light. When the window rolled down, one student infamously shouted, “Hey, Mary, want to race?” Without hesitation, Mary gunned the throttle, and shot down Main street to impress those teenagers who were left behind in a cloud of white smoke! And, without hesitation or doubt, she now shares eternal life with her beloved husband, Marvin, whom she was married to for over 50years. Somewhere in heaven, Glenn Miller is putting on his his best performance of “In the Mood”, as Mary and Marvin dance for all eternity in the presence of God. You are invited to a celebration of Mary’s life and a Vigil service on Monday night, January 7, 2019, at Vidor Memorial Funeral home between the hours of 6:00pm and 8:00pm.
