Joe Elmer Collins, 91, of Vidor, passed away peacefully at his residence on Friday, February 14, 2025. A native of Rusk, Texas, Joe made Vidor his home in 1956, where he built a life centered around faith, family, and hard work.
A devoted member of the Vidor Church of Christ, Joe not only worshiped there but helped build the very church that became a cornerstone of his life. He was the proud owner and operator of Collins Gulf service station, where he worked tirelessly to provide for his family. From picking cotton at just seven years old to logging in Cherokee County, Joe knew the value of hard work and carried that ethic throughout his life.
But beyond his dedication to his trade, Joe’s true passion was his family. They were the heart of everything he did, and he took care of them until the very end. He cherished the simple joys of life—sitting outdoors with a cup of coffee, watching the birds and embracing nature’s beauty. He loved nothing more than gathering around a campfire with his grandkids, weaving tales that showcased his gift for storytelling. A jokester at heart, Joe had a knack for bringing laughter into every room and was known for his quick wit and signature humor.
A proud Texan through and through, Joe admired Sam Houston, claimed to have invented the "Texas Handshake," and carried the spirit of his home state in everything he did. Even in his final days, he found comfort in listening to Bible tapes, holding fast to his faith.
Joe is survived by his children: David Collins Sr. and wife Kathy of Vidor, TX; Rickie Collins and wife Sammie of Vidor, TX; Pamela Cole and husband Ronnie of Vidor, TX; Debbie Jones and husband Roger of Kirbyville, TX; Judy Collins Garcia of Vidor, TX; Martha Collins Williams of Vidor, TX; Daniel Collins and wife Mindy of Vidor, TX; and Janice Collins Wood and husband Mike of Vidor, TX. He is also survived by his sister, Ettie Bernice Reed of Pasadena, TX, along with 26 grandchildren, 56 great-grandchildren, 34 great great-grandchildren and still counting. They will carry on his legacy of love, laughter, and Texas pride.
He is reunited in heaven with his beloved wife, Effie "Gene" Collins, grandsons Kenneth Dean Collins and Aaron Zachary Garcia, and great-granddaughter Kira Elaine Watson.
Joe Elmer Collins was a man of strong faith, deep love, and unwavering humor. His stories, laughter, and presence will be missed, but his memory will live on in the hearts of all who knew him.
