Evelyn Carter Powell Van Houten, 92, born November 4th, 1925 in Hartburg, TX to Floyd and Emma Carter, died November 8th, 2017 in Katy, TX. She attended school in Deweyville, TX and graduated in 1944 as Valedictorian of her class. She worked at Livingston Shipyard until the war was over. She then attended business college and later taught shorthand and bookkeeping at the college. Evelyn is survived by 2 children: Paul Powell and his wife Bee Gee and David Powell and his wife Mindi, 1 son-in-law; Marvin Phillips, Sr., 8 grandchildren; Marvin, Jr., Steven, Jon and Matthew Phillips, Brian Powell, Jenny Gross, Lisa Powell, and numerous great grandchildren, 2 step children; Darlene Julian and Kenny Van Houten. She was preceded in death by her husband; John Van Houten, and infant son, daughter; Debra, grandson; Josh Phillips, sister; Katheryn Sandborn and brother; Floyd Carter, Jr. and her parents. Visitation will be Sunday, November 12, 2017 from 1:30 p.m. to 2:30 p.m. at Memorial Funeral Home of Vidor with funeral services at 2:30 p.m. Interment will follow at Del Rose Cemetery in Vidor.
