David Ray Smallwood Sr., 56, of Hemphill, passed away on Thursday, August 8th, 2024, at Sabine County Hospital in Hemphill.

David was a man who truly lived life to the fullest. His love for the outdoors was evident in his passion for hunting, fishing, and spending time on his boat, where he found solace and joy. A proud collector of guns, David’s enthusiasm for life extended beyond his hobbies. He was the life of the party, the kind of person who could never meet a stranger. His infectious energy and warm personality made everyone around him feel welcomed and cherished.

During David’s career he worked diligently as  a tow truck operator for over 25 years with Herrera’s Towing and Ray’s Wrecker Service. David was also deeply committed to his community, serving as an active member of the Six Mile Volunteer Firefighter team, where he dedicated his time and energy to helping others.

He is survived by his loving wife, Kim Smallwood; his children, David Smallwood Jr. and wife Rebecca, Bonnie Rosas and husband Enrique, and Ciara Smallwood and her significant other Justin McGaha. David's mother, Frances Freeman, and his siblings, Donna Shute and husband Glen, Colleen Simmons and husband Scott, Rachel Freeman, Shirley Smith, Clay Smallwood, and Tommy Smallwood, will carry his memory with them. He is also survived by his mother-in-law Kay Hall, brother-in-law Thomas Hall, sister-in-law Renee Dickerson and her husband Cody, as well as his seven grandchildren, and numerous cousins, nieces, nephews, and friends, all of whom held a special place in his heart.

David was preceded in death by his father, Desmond Smallwood, his dad, Jim Freeman, and his father-in-law, Glen Hall.

David’s legacy of love, laughter, and service will continue to live on in the hearts of all who knew and loved him.
