Arthur Donald Astley

Arthur Donald Don Astley was born March 25, 1923 to John E. and Anna (Frickel) Astley. Don entered the Navy during WWII and served also in Korea, serving 20 years and retired from the service. His service experience included trips in the Atlantic and Pacific, the Embassy in Spain, and the Orange Naval Station where he helped process ships returning to be retired to storage in the mothball fleet for future service if needed. While stationed in Orange, Don met and married Betty Jean Weatherford. They became parents to three sons, Donald Edward Astley, James Lynn Astley, and Dennis Gene Astley. After retiring from the Navy, Don went to work for the Department of Defense, Army Detachment Port of Beaumont, processing the war supplies being shipped in and out of the Port.

Don took great pride in his home garden where he devoted many hours raising vegetables which he shared with family, friends, and neighbors. Don and his family were members of Pine Forest Baptist Church where he served faithfully until health problems limited his attendance. Don enjoyed playing 42 each week with other members.
Don was preceded in death by his parents, and two sons, Don and James. He is survived by his wife of 60 years, Betty (Weatherford) Astley, one son Dennis and his wife Tammy (Burr) Astley, six grandchildren, and five great grandchildren, one brother, four sisters, several brothers and sisters-in-law, nieces and nephews.
Visitation will begin at 6:00 p.m. on Monday, November 24, 2008 at Memorial Funeral Home of Vidor. Funeral services will begin at 2:00 p.m. on Tuesday, November 25, 2008 at Memorial Funeral Home, with burial to follow at Restlawn Memorial Park in Vidor, TX.
