Annie Stephenson Portie

Annie Stephenson Portie, died in her home in Vidor, Texas, Monday, September 30, 2013. She was born October 10, 1920 in Williamson Settlement, near Vidor, to B. Van and Delia Baker Stephenson. Annie was the oldest daughter of nine children. She was a lifelong member of The Church of Jesus Christ of Latter-Day Saints. Annie served in all the church auxillaries for women and youth. She and Lloyd served a 1 year mission at the Dallas Texas Temple. Annie was a faithful visiting teacher. Annie graduated from Vidor High School in 1938 and Jefferson Davis Nursing School in 1941. She retired from Vidor Independent School District. Annie was the first Truant Officer and was working at Vidor Jr High School at the time of her retirement. She also had worked as private duty nurse, clinic nurse and hospital staff nurse. Annie married Samuel Portie in her families home on October 10, 1941. They have made their home in Vidor the rest of their lives. Annie was a homemaker, gardener, farmer caretaker and nurse to many. She is preceded in death by her parents; husbands, Sammie Portie and Lloyd Fruge; brothers, Byard, Merlin, Quincy and Baker Stephenson; sisters, Alma Hare and Effie Dowler; grandchildren, Ryan Murray and Rebecca Simpson; great-granddaughter Kaitlyn Simpson. Survivors are daughters, Muzette Alvis (Charlie B.), Donna Simpson (Mike) all of Vidor, and Ilene Murray (Byron) of Idaho; sons, Ed Portie (Pam) of Colorado and Winston Portie of Florida; foster children, Ronnie Marquis (Donna) of San Antonio and Sharon Ridgeway of Orange; sisters Lavon Havens and Betty Lou Van Pelt both of Vidor, 20 grandchildren, 35 great grandchildren and 3 great-great grandchildren. Special thanks to her care-giver, Shirley Mahana and staff of Providence Home Health. Visitation will begin at 6:00 p.m. on Wednesday, October 9, 2013 at Memorial Funeral Home of Vidor. In lieu of flowers donations may be made to Perpetual Education Fund online in her memory: donate/lds.org LDS Philanthropies. Funeral services will be held at 3:00 p.m. on Thursday, October 10, 2013 in Chapel of The Church of Jesus Christ of Latter-Day Saints in Vidor under the direction of Memorial Funeral Home of Vidor, with burial to follow at Restlawn Memorial Park in Vidor. Pallbearers are grandsons: Lance Alvis, Blake Murray, Randall Murray, Jon Portie, Spencer Simpson, Jared Simpson, Ben Portie & home teacher Jon Healy.
